THE RINGERS

The bell ringers of All Saints Swanton Morley were formed in late 1999 to ring on the newly restored and augmented bells for the New Year’s Day Peal. A letter was sent out by the Friends of All Saints Church asking for volunteers to learn to ring and seven people came to learn.

The band was trained by ringers from Beetley, Whissonsette and Gressenhall at local towers, so that on the first day of the new Millennium the bells could peal out with thousands of others around the country.

Over the last decade the bell ringers have gone from strength to strength; with the band growing in numbers and the standard and complexity of ringing improving greatly.

The ringers always endeavour to ring for all services held at All Saints Church. We have a dedicated team of Sunday service ringers, who make sure that the bells of All Saints are rung every Sunday there is a service to welcome the congregation to the church. In addition to the usual Sunday Services the bells are often rung for weddings, funerals and other important services throughout the year.

The ringers have also started and brought back a number of traditions at the tower. One of the traditions reinstated at All Saints is the tradition of ringing in the New Year at Midnight on New Year’s Eve. One of the new traditions started at the tower is connected to the ringing for the Service of Remembrance held in November. As well as ringing the bells before the service the tenor is tolled as the congregation file out to the War Memorial, after which the bells ring for 30 minutes after the laying of the wreaths.

The bell ringers have also made sure that important events in the village are marked with the ringing of the bell. This has included ringing to celebrate milestones in organisations which are based in the village.

We are always looking for new people to join our band and take up the art of bell ringing, if you think you’d be please have a look at the “Interested in Learning” page of this website.

The ringers also hold lots of events through out the year including an annual tower outing were the ringers of Swanton Morley visit towers in Norfolk to have a go at ringing in different towers and on different weights and numbers of bells.

In 2010 the ringers marked the tenth anniversary sine their formation with a number of events which including a sponsored skydive and Tower Open Day. The anniversary culminate in a special service conducted by the Canon Sally Theakston
