The annual outing of the ringers took place on Saturday 16th May.
The first tower of the day was Acle St. Edmunds where the unusual steel frame in the ringing chamber made some ringers slightly uneasy, however after a few rounds and call changes we began to relax and enjoying the experience of ringing within the frame!
After Acle it was a short drive to St. Mary’s church in South Walsham. The bells sounded wonderful here whilst many of the group explored the grounds and church making ringers short on the ground. More rounds and call changes were rung as well as the tower’s favourite method All Saints.
Another short drive took as to Ranworth’s St. Helen where, once we climbed the never ending stairs, we were greeted by a beautiful sounding ring of bells. With some more well struck ringing the band enjoyed the sound of ringing echoing across the broad. Ranworth was also the stop off point for our picnic but with grey clouds sending down a few showers most of the group sheltered in the church, whilst a brave (or is that foolish) group sat outside enjoying the British summer and were spoilt by Vivienne’s salad and chocolate cake.
It was then a half hour drive to our next tower, the beautiful church of St. Mary’s Martham. The band was taken back by the breathtaking stone and wood work as well as the spacious gallery ringing chamber with views of the church. Another tower with an easy to ring and wonderful sounding set of bells.
The final tower was the great 12 bell tower of Great Yarmouth, with it being many ringers first attempt on 12. After a shaky start, we got into some excellently struck rounds and call changes. When we finally stood a great hush descended the tower with Celia proclaiming that it was magnificent. Some more rounds and call changes followed with a final ring of Plain Bob triples on the back eight before Ray showed us the 13 bells.
After the final tower some ringers went for a delicious meal of fish and chips on the sea front of Great Yarmouth where we were spoilt by the staff of Las Palmers.
